Landslide Research Section

Using advanced geospatial techniques and geological data, DMG prepares landslide inventory, hazard zonation and susceptibility maps.  These maps identify areas prone to landslides, helping in land-use planning, infrastructure development, and disaster risk reduction efforts. Landslide inventory databases for the Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces have been completed, with ongoing work for the Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.

In response to requests from government bodies such as the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipalities, or other organizations, DMG conducts emergency geological studies in landslide-affected areas. Following the Gorkha Earthquake 2015, a Stability Study of Settlements Affected by Landslides Triggered by the earthquake was conducted under the leadership of DMG with permission from the Home Minister. The study encompassed several settlements across 19 districts and 125 local bodies (VDC/Municipality). In-depth stability assessments were conducted on 107 settlements in 8 districts, and detailed reports were submitted to the Home Ministry and NRA (National Reconstruction Authority). Subsequently, based on the findings of this study, resettlement programs were further initiated.
